Laura Ashley 17-week UK retail sales up 8.4 pct

June 2 (Reuters) - British fashion and homewares retailer Laura Ashley (ALY.L) said on Tuesday 2 June its total UK retail sales in the first 17 weeks of the current financial year rose 8.4 percent, aided by promotional activity and an increase in retail selling space.

"Despite the challenging economic environment, the board remains cautiously optimistic for the current year," the company said.

Like-for-like sales grew 6.9 percent, while e-commerce and mail order sales rose 11.0 percent in the first 17 weeks of the company's current financial year ending January 2010.

The company, which currently has 222 franchised stores internationally, said its partners plan to open more stores.
