Superdry said Friday that Chief Financial Officer Nick Gresham has decided to step down “with immediate effect”. It was clearly an unexpected move as there’s no replacement CFO waiting in the wings.

But the company said the decision to leave was Gresham’s, although it gave no specific reason for his departure.

The firm said that a “search for a permanent replacement will start while interim arrangements are put in place”.

He only joined the company in the CFO position in June last year, originally on an interim basis, although he was confirmed in the post permanently two months later.

His appointment came after co-founder Julian Dunkerton engineered a return to the struggling company following a long period in which he was extremely critical of its strategy.

Dunkerton said of Gresham on Friday: Nick joined Superdry at a time of significant change and challenge in the business. He has played an important role in putting the company in a stronger position than it was before he joined and helped to steer Superdry through the impact of the Covid pandemic. I would like to personally thank Nick for all his efforts in supporting me, the company and all our stakeholders. I wish him all the best for the future.”

He’d previously held senior finance roles at Wiggle, Oak Furniture Land and Homebase.
