WARSAW, Sept 30, 2009 (AFP) - Police in Poland said Wednesday 30 September they had broken up a gang of thieves stealing luxury goods including designer clothes, shoes and cosmetics in Italy, mainly in its fashion capital Milan.

"We have detained eight people, five men and three women," Janusz Usarz, a criminal investigator with local police in Tarnow told AFP.

A 32-year-old man suspected of being the mastermind of the operation was among those detained, but his identity was not made public.

Police seized stolen goods estimated to be worth some 520,000 zlotys (123,000 euros, 179,400 dollars).

According to police, women gang members stole goods from Italy which were then transported to Poland for sale.

The gang was active since 2007, possibly earlier, Usarz said.
