The eventual outcome of Intu’s administration filing may still be unclear, but this hasn't stopped retailers from signing up to open stores at the company’s major shopping malls. The latest announcement is that Next will be opening three of its new concept premium beauty stores at Intu locations.

It’s taking advantage of the very large spaces vacated by struggling Debenhams and has signed a deal to take on the former department stores at Intu Watford, Milton Keynes and Metrocentre.

All three malls will see the arrival of Next Beauty, Home and Women’s fashion lifestyle offers with the opening dates still to be confirmed. “This will allow Next to extend its fast growing premium beauty offer from online-only into bricks and mortar,” the company said.

It comes as beauty remains a key growth area in a British retail sector where growth has been crimped by Covid-19 and by Brexit

With Harrods also launching a standalone premium beauty concept at Intu’s Lakeside mall, it’s clear that Next is tapping into a rich growth seam that will further its ambitions to move beyond its fashion and interiors roots.

The UK health and beauty market is set to grow by 8.8% by 2024 (according to Global Data) when it will be worth an extra £2 billion.
