The winners will eventually be revealed on September 22 in Milan, during a soirée in La Scala, and the winner awarded the Franca Sozzani GCC Emerging Designer Award, named after the late editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue.

The five finalists are Flavia la Rocca of Italy, who is noted for creating modular garments in regenerated materials; Anyango Mpinga who works in silk fur, created from waste yarns; ACBC by Edoardo Iannuzzi who designs shoes with biodegradable outsides; Twins Florence who specialize in certified recycled denim yarn; and Benedetta Bruzziches, who develops terrazzo-style handbags with production waste.

These emerged from an original group of 10 semi-finalists that included Dalpos, Gin Salemo, Kexuan Li, Michele Chiocciolini and Unravelau.

The jury included Camera della Moda president Carlo Capasa; Eco-Age’s creative director Livia Firth; Milano Unica’s president Ercole Botto Poala; YouTube’s head of new fashion and beauty Derek Blasberg; Sinead Burke, writer, activist and broadcaster; InStyle’s editor in chief Laura Brown and Sara Sozzani Maino, deputy director special projects Vogue Italia and head of Vogue Talents.

The contest is a key element in the Green Carpet Awards, which was founded by the Camera della Moda, Italian fashion’s governing body, and Eco-Age, and supported by Milano Unica, the Italian textiles and accessories salon, and is now in its third year.
