After two years at the head of Gucci’s digital business, Martin Barthel joined management consultancy firm Boston Consulting Group (BCG) in May. A luxury industry and e-tail specialist formerly with eBay and Facebook, Barthel, 51, had already worked at BCG from 2001 to 2005, after a stint at Chanel.

He has now been appointed associate director at BCG Digital Ventures, BCG’s start-up and innovation incubator, taking charge of its Paris office. Set up in 2014, the incubator’s mission is to invent, launch and develop ground-breaking start-ups catering to the innovation needs of major corporations.

BCG indicated that Barthel will focus in his new role on initiatives relating to the digital transformation of leading consumer goods and retail industry groups.

BCG Digital Ventures operates sixteen centres and laboratories located in Berlin, Casablanca, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, New York, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Singapore, Sydney, Tokyo, Paris, the Middle East and India, and is reportedly working with more than 400 clients worldwide.

Meanwhile at Gucci, Jessica Martino was named chief digital business officer last October, and is overseeing the luxury label’s digital operations from her New York base.
