Despite all the reports to the contrary, Dick's Sporting Goods is still investing in brick and mortar retail with the announcement of three new stores opening this month.

The Pittsburgh-based sporting goods retailer has announced grand opening plans for 3 new retail locations across the US. Two are West Coast locations, one in San Diego, CA, and one in Bellingham, WA, north of Seattle. The third is in Lake City, Florida.

Lauren Hobart, Executive Vice President & Chief Consumer & Digital Officer, Dick's Sporting Goods spoke of the relevance of the choice of the cities, citing "the rich history of sports and outdoor traditions in these markets."

The opening weekend events will take place through May, with athlete appearances to include Seattle Seahawks tight end Luke Willson at the Bellingham store and Jacksonville running back Fred Taylor to appear at the Florida store.

As reports stream in about how retail is struggling, this is a bold move for Dick's and may be indicative of the direction the retailer intends to go with its business overall. Dick's continues to add to its private label lines that directly compete with sporting goods store mainstays Nike and Under Armour. The private label collections launch online first with in store build-outs following after the initial launch.

If Dick's continues this product launch schedule, the chain's brick and mortar retail investment suggests it may be shifting out of branded assortments towards a larger private label business on the whole.
