The move will see the famous footballer turned fashion mogul add another category for fans to interact with his eponymous brand, owned by his David Beckham Ventures business which also handles his partnerships with Adidas and L’Oreal.

Safilo, whose portfolio includes licenses for Dior, Fendi, Givenchy and Max Mara, will design, manufacture and distribute David Beckham sunglasses and prescription glasses, with the first collection set to launch in January 2020.

David Beckham commented: “I wear sunglasses all the time and this is a category that I love. So, it’s important to me to work with a partner who cares as much about the design and craftsmanship of the product as I do."

The eyewear announcement comes days after the Beckham family bought out their business partner Simon Fuller, acquiring his 33% stake in Beckham Brand Holdings for about $50 million (£38m).

The former England footballer has also a stake in menswear label Kent & Curwen, and founded a men’s grooming brand called House 99 with L’Oreal last year.

“It is a great honour for me to welcome to our portfolio this brand that carries the name of one of the most famous and successful players in the world,” said Angelo Trocchia, CEO of Safilo Group, adding that the brand will be in the premium segment.
