Online retailers have boomed during the pandemic and that means warehouse expansion has been significant. The latest company to announce new capacity is Asos and it plans to invest £90 million in radically expanding its UK space.

The company is opening a state-of-the-art fulfilment centre in Lichfield and, importantly given the large number of jobs being lost in UK retail, it will create 2,000 jobs in the next three years.

The warehouse, which is an AEW and Allianz Real Estate joint venture, will cover 437,000 sq ft and will open within the next 12 months.

Asos expects to gradually expand its capacity at the site and that it will be at capacity as the full recovery sets in by 2023.

The company’s CEO Nick Beighton said it’s a “significant investment” for the firm and is a “reflection of the confidence Asos has in its future and the quality of the skills and talent available in this well-placed location.

“When fully up and running in 2023, the site will support our ever-increasing customer demand and enable us to develop our offerings and delivery capabilities even further.”

The new facility will join the company’s portfolio of existing UK and international warehouses in Barnsley, Berlin and Atlanta.
