Following Selfridges' Project Ocean campaign in 2015, which saw all single-use plastic water bottles removed from its stores, this year the department store is partnering with the Zoological Society of London and Marine Partners to inspire the rest of the city to follow suit.

The #Oneless campaign aims to raise awareness of the danger of plastic for the ocean with the goal of making London free of single-use plastic water bottles by 2021.

According to research, by 2025 the oceans could contain one kilogram of plastic waste for every three kilos of fish. Plastic is a serious and persistent threat to marine life and habitats.

Alannah Weston, Deputy Chairman of Selfridges Group, said: “The Selfridges Project Ocean campaign is one which is very close to my heart and our business. With our latest initiative we aim to rethink plastic, create and implement innovative solutions, and provide simple ways for people, industry and policy makers to take positive action to remove single use plastic water bottles from their supply chain, with the ultimate aim of making London a single use plastic free city by 2021. We hope London will join us on this incredible initiative.”

The #OneLess campaign is calling on London businesses and retailers to take the pledge and switch to refillable bottles. It will be working across all sectors of the city to increase access to free drinking water and phase-out the provision of single use plastic water bottles.

13 billion single-use plastic bottles are used in the UK each year, which represents an average of over 200 bottles per person. Only 50% of these are currently recycled, said the retailer.
