In the background, the East River, its shimmering waters and the ever-changing skyline of a metropolis constantly on the go. Hugo Boss has chosen New York's Fulton Street Market, Manhattan's old fish market, close by Brooklyn Bridge and South Street, to present the men's Spring/Summer 2018 collection. It is called 'Summer of Ease', a carefully crafted collection with an artisanal imprint, blending tailored casualwear and sophisticated functional details.
The tailoring tradition of the German menswear label, whose 2016 revenue reached €2.7 billion, is revealed in 'Summer of Ease' with hitherto-unseen simplicity. The label's signature suits are cut in lightweight, unlined fabrics, in various shades of grey and off-white, looking sophisticated and natural even at the height of summer. The fabrics are light cotton, linen, silk and flimsy leather with a high-tech treatment that gives it a paper-like feel. The shirts too are lightweight, featuring interwoven patterns on the front for a more informal mood. Even sporty items are manufactured in a tailored fashion.
Hugo Boss' new collection is a fresher, more summery take on the nautical motifs introduced with the Autumn/Winter 2017-18 collection's double-breasted jackets. Stripes abound, horizontal on the classic Brittany-style sweater, and lengthwise on sleeves and trousers' stitching, for a more sporty effect. The twine details on sweaters and coats are threaded through rivets and metal eyelets, with a nod to nautical functionality, a theme which appears also in the embroidered HBNY logo and the map coordinates for Columbus Circle, where Hugo Boss' New York flagship store is located.
